Still In Limbo

Remember that farcical house move I mentioned in my last post?  This week, it has turned into an absolute car crash.  At this present moment, I am writing from a tiny little corner of my ‘in-laws’ dining room, in which I’m managed to find space to set up my PC.  Everything has fallen through and my wife and I are temporarily homeless - with almost all of our possessions locked away in a storage facility.  This isn’t freelancing, this is bloody winging it!

It just so happens that all of this is going on during what is probably the busiest period I have experienced in my relatively short time as a freelancer.  My application for the local Service Provider Register (from which web developers etc are selected when someone applied to a local body for funding) went through, I’ve suddenly had an explosion of quote requests through my portfolio site, I’ve just signed an arrangement with a business support company to provide web design services to their customers, and a bunch of my old clients have come back with more work for me.

Bloody typical!

To be honest it could be a lot worse, at least I have ready access to my PC and laptop, and have managed to carve out a half decent temporary office - however it’s things like not having access to a printer, or letterheaded paper, or more clean suits/shirts that are dragging me down.  I’ve got to go and see a potential client tomorrow for what could turn out to be my biggest job yet, and I have absolutely nothing I can take along other than myself, my laptop and my notepad (usually I use a client questionairre).  I’m sure it won’t be a big deal and I’ll manage fine, but it’s certainly something which keeps playing on my mind.

I’m finding there is nothing worse than getting everything you hoped for in terms of attention, status and (most importantly) custom; but not being fully equipped to handle it.  But so far I’m hanging in there, just have to keep on winging it until everything sorts itself out… bloody typical though…

    Hi.

    I am just wondering if you wouldnt mind sharing the link to your portfolio site? Would be interested to see the sort of work your producing. Out of curiosity, what sort of business insurance do you have / would recommend? its just im in the process of getting my stuff together to go freelance and I dont seem to be able to find any good sources of information on what is required with regards to insurance requirements.
